Stephen M. Cohen, President and Founder

Steve Cohen is a graduate of Lehman College with a master's degree in education, and was a special education teacher and teacher trainer in New York City. For the past 15 years, he has co-led golf workshops in personal growth at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, where, as a long-time resident, he had served as a member of the senior management team, group leader and gestalt practitioner. Steve founded the Society in the belief that the metaphoric qualities of sport, especially golf, provide limitless opportunities for learning, self-discovery and transformation.

Bryan Golden, Director since 2007

Bryan Golden is Managing Director of Private Capital Corporation, Novato, CA, an investment-banking consulting firm specializing in “Comprehensive Perpetuation Planning” for small and medium sized privately held companies.  He brings to the SIS board almost 40 years of inspirational leadership and management experience in both a distinguished military career and extensive service in senior management of private and publicly owned firms, including a small manufacturing firm that he founded and operated.  He loves the game of golf, and, as a lifelong learner, the objectives of the Society regarding opportunities for discovery, enlightenment and transformation through the golfing experience resonate strongly with him.

Richard Lees, Director since 2006

Richard Lees, is President of Richard Lees Capital Management, a registered investment advisory in Los Angeles, and Editor of 21forward.com, an online investment journal. Educated at Stanford, The University of Michigan, and Yale, he was an award winning writer of plays, films, and novels before becoming a money manager in 1991. Also a former gymnast and tennis player, he rediscovered the magic of golf, which he played only as a child, when he read Golf In The Kingdom. He then joined the Society immediately upon learning of its belief in the grace and transformative power of the game, which he hopes to help spread by serving on the Board.

Peter Kargeannes, Director since 2004

Peter is a litigation partner with the Milwaukee-based law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP.  While attending a “Golf in the Kingdom” workshop at Esalen in 2000 he discovered the Shivas Irons Society and found a common love not only for the aesthetics of golf but also for Society’s approach to the game as a means of self-knowledge and transformation. He believes the Society's uniqueness is grounded in its members and he is deeply committed to the ongoing viability of the Society.
