It was in 1975, as a participant in some Esalen workshops, that I first experienced Gestalt Therapy (in a form that we would probably call “Gestalt Practice” today.) These workshops not only effected me on a deep and emotional level but the experience represented a significant crossroads in my life — One that sent me down a new path of self-discovery — with Gestalt Practice as my primary means of transportation — and Dick Price as my most significant driving instructor.
How this path led to a “Golf in the Kingdom” workshop at Esalen and the ultimate founding of the Shivas Irons Society is too long a story (actually more of an Odyssey) to recount here but when I was invited to take part in the celebration of Dick’s life and work I was struck by the words in the title “...Returning to the Source...” They brought me to the realization of how much of my own life’s work, including the SIS, had as its source, my experiences at Esalen and the mentoring of its co-founder Richard (Dick) Price.

“Askernish Old” is the name used by a number of golf writers to describe a golf course designed in 1891 by Old Tom Morris on remote South Uist, an island in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides that was quite literally “lost in the sands of time” and rediscovered in 2005. It has since been restored and as far as I know is currently the only course on the island... unlike at St Andrews you will find no “Askernish New.”

In the premier issue of the Society's Newsletter, I found the first “Message from the President” that I had addressed to what was then a small but growing community. It’s been seventeen years since I wrote this message, but reading it brought me back to a place of joy and passion that I am happy to recapture.
