Wonderful! It will be an interesting venture for you - especially as you are allowing us to do the journey with you. If you get stuck on some of the Scottish words, then let me know and I'll try to help.

Enjoy your journey!
Heather

Ah Jo ...

I think you'll be surprised at how you can connect with the story. You will finally meet the "real" Shivas Irons and understand, at some level, our shared obsession. I envy you this journey and will dust off my copy (signed by MM himself) and read it again so it's fresh in my alleged mind.

jrs

Okay, Jo,
Tell me what you are going to read each day and I'll try to keep up with you. There's a lot of great reference material in this book that if one is a writer or a poet, he/she can relate to writing about a lot of other things...the all-night symposium is full of it, and so on. So, i'm going to try to keep up with you--don't go too fast--and we'll see if the reading inspires a few poems, not necessarily about golf, but perhaps 'place' and how not to waste one's life. There's a lot more to this book than 'the gemme'. A lot of people (no one is SIS, of course) seem content, no, they seem to actually believe they like living in the gorse--perhaps something akin to 'the allegory of the caves'. Let's see if we can define and understand further, "True Gravity"
H C

I'll stay with you on this, Jo. I'd never REALLY read it either till I knew I had to for my own book of 'golf mysticism,' 'An Unexpected Dance' -- and then it just blew me away. I agree with Jim, and would say further, don't even worry about the golf per se, just get into Shivas. What a guy/legend/archetype! See you at Stonebrae.

From your view behind the desk, you witnessed the universal connectivity of Shivas Irons...and it isn't just the golf. We all get to KNOW Shivas when the time is right. NOW is your time for this particular part of the Shivas Irons experience. As you recall, I aquired a dog that was named Shivas Irons and it took me 12 years before I read the book. That was 18 months ago and I wouldn't have met up with the SIS had I "read" the book earlier. I've been "living" the Shivas since we connected with the canine Shivas. I'll read along with you, too. Go ahead and LEAD the GITK bookclub.
In True Gravity,
Jo Williams Schrimpf & Shivas Irons

Jo,

I have read this delightful boook a number of times but never, probably, slowly enough to savour all its intricacies and delights. Your venture will give me the opportunity to read "Golf in the Kingdom" yet again. In fact I will not read my "old, dog-eared copy" but my very snappy, handsome, leather bound edition. Now hopefully you will read your copy at a civilised pace and this will allow me to imbibe in a wee malt whisky or two as I read the portion that you have just finished. No doubt all and sundry will comment and lend their own insight and wisdom to the blog as your own journey unfolds. My insights from Down Under will no doubt be informed by my upbringing near another famous golfing arena, Carnoustie. Oh and I suppose they may also be coloured by the malt whisky in good Shivas tradition. Enjoy the journey Jo. Yours aye, Colin

I've been wanting to read this book for years. It's setting on my bookshelf but I never have time. I barely have time for golf and will not sacrifice my golf time for reading time even if the book is about golf.
