Letter from the President

To all of our members:

Thank you for your participation in the Society and your support for our mission and our vision. You are a valued member of our community, and I am writing to ask that you take a few moments to renew your membership for 2010. As in the past, an essential element of our long-term vision is to create a community whose camaraderie, shared purpose and appreciation for golf provide the “true gravity” of the Society—that which makes us a unique and special community within the larger world of golfers. We especially value the opportunity to provide a setting for meaningful discourse and a fresh experience of the game and our place in it.

And in that regard, 2009 was once again a solid year for Shivas Irons Society members. On the charitable front:

  • We sent another eight youngsters to summer golf camp at Golf House in Tennessee
  • We successfully embarked upon a new initiative called “The Golf Dream Project,” which was conceived as a program to provide a transformational golf experience to a golfer, or member of a golfer’s family, in a time of urgent medical, financial, or psychological need.
  • We continued our support of youth golf in Bhutan with a substantial donation of golf equipment and clothing.

On the activity front, we hosted a great roster of regional, national and international events – including, among others:

  • Our 17th Anniversary Celebration at Bayonet GC in California;
  • Our annual Kingdom Tour, which in 2009 took us to St. Andrews, Scotland.
  • Shivas in the Bluegrass, the first (and hopefully annual) Rosemary Meredith Memorial Scramble in Alvaton, Kentucky
  • Colorado Linksland: The Experience of Ballyneal, Ballyneal Golf Club, Holyoke, CO
  • The Shivas Irons Games of the Links at Bandon Dunes in Bandon, Oregon
  • The Shivas Irons Gathering at Coppinwood in Toronto, Canada;
  • The 10th Annual Seamus MacDuff Fall Finale in Kohler, Wisconsin;

We also continued to expand the Society’s website with new and varied content and a much-improved user interface.

These are difficult economic times and, of course, challenges remain for a society of our size. We need your continued participation and support. We want to provide more scholarships for kids, sponsor more local activities, make the web site much more interactive, and continue to develop new and exciting educational initiatives that further our mission. The Journal is not yet a self-sufficient project. Future issues remain dependent on additional fundraising, the active support of members, and a cost-effective plan to get them in the hands of interested readers.

Please invest in a strong, vital future for The Shivas Irons Society by renewing your membership at the highest possible level you can. And invite your friends and associates to join. Have them visit our website at www.shivas.org, or email us with their name(s) & contact information, and we will send them membership information in your name.

Use this link to return to the Golf Shop and renew.

Yours in True Gravity,
