GOLF COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Royal County Down

count down

Royal County Down is located in one of the world’s most naturally beautiful links settings in the Murlough Nature Reserve. Against the magnificent backdrop of the Mountains of Mourne, the links stretches along the shores of Dundrum Bay, zigzagging back and forth to provide a different vista from virtually every hole.

The narrowest ribbons of fairways thread their way through as impressive a set of sand dunes as could be imagined. The fairways are surrounded by purple heather and golden gorse, so beautiful to look at but so punishing for any who may stray from the prescribed path.

The ‘bearded’ bunkers are world famous and feature overhanging lips of marram, red fescue and heather. The greens are fast and many are domed, rejecting any shot lacking conviction. This is a true test of any player’s command of the traditional bump and run, the preferred way to play any links.

The ninth hole is one of the most photographed holes in world golf. A 486 yard par 4, it is played from one side of a huge mound down to a fairway some 60 ft below and 260 yards from the tee. From the bottom of the slope the second shot is played over two bunkers to a raised green.

The finest of all links courses, it offers golfers of all standards the opportunity of playing a truly great course with dramatic panorama of the surrounding mountains and coastline.

Lough Erne - The Faldo Championship Course

The Faldo Championship Course at Lough Erne is an exciting challenge for golfers of all abilities, featuring 18 spectacular lough ernegolf holes. Situated between Castle Hume Lough and Lower Lough Erne, 14 of the holes have water in play, highlighted by the iconic 10th Hole, ‘Emerald Isle’ where the green is surrounded on three sides by water.

Lough Erne golf course demonstrates the unique and beautiful landscape native to Ireland, with stunning views of the Fermanagh Lakelands and surrounding rolling hills. The course routing takes full advantage of this natural topography providing golfers with superb playing conditions all year round.

Golfers can take some time out at The Halfway House situated behind the ninth Green, with stunning views over Lower Lough Erne. Other dining options available at The Resort include The Loughside Bar & Grill, The Blaney Bar and The Catalina Restaurant.

The Faldo Championship Course hosted The Lough Erne Challenge, The Duel on The Lough a stroke play between Rory McIlroy and Padraig Harrington, which saw Rory McIlroy set The Faldo Course record of 68. The Faldo Championship Course is set to host The Faldo Series Grand Final in 2011 and 2012 and The Faldo Series Ireland Championship during the same years, Rory McIlroy, Lough Erne Resort’s Touring Professional is a former member of Team Faldo and won both the Under-15 and Under-17 Faldo Series titles in 2004 and 2006 respectively.

County Sligo Golf Club at Rosses Point

'Widely regarded as one of the great championship links'

County Sligo Golf Club is widely regarded as one of the great championship links courses and is located in the picturesque seaside village of Rosses Point just 8km from Sligo and is known locally as "The Point". Originally founded in 1894 as a 9 Hole course it is now a modern 27 holes complsligo 15ex with spacious clubhouse and up to date facilities.

The club is the home of the famous West of Ireland Open amateur championship played every Easter since 1923 and has hosted many other prestigious events including the Home Internationals, the Irish Close and the Irish Professional Matchplay Championship.

The original clubhouse was built on its current site in 1912 and was designed by George O'Connor, an eminent Dublin based architect. The modern clubhouse of today still retains the beautiful Tudor style facade that exudes an old world charm fronting on to the practice putting green. The updated clubhouse was officially opened by the then Taoiseach, Mr Bertie Ahern, on the 29th of April 2005.

The County Sligo Golf Club now has a lovely 9 hole course and driving range in Bomore. These are located to the right of the 5th and 6th holes and are accessed by the roadway traversing the first and third fairways. This Bomore course is a lovely challenge in itself while the championship course is one of the great golf challenges of Ireland and the level of difficulty of the course varies with the diverse weather conditions experienced in "The Point".

The course was redesigned by the famous golf architect, Harry S. Colt, in 1927 and continuous improvements have been made over the years to make the County Sligo course, in the words of the great Peter Alliss, "a tremendous test for the highest quality player and great fun for the modest competitor, Rosses Point stands at the very top of the list of Irish courses".

The spectacular scenery of mountain, ocean and countryside which surrounds this classic links has been immortalized in the poetry of William Butler Yeats.

Enniscrone Golf Club - The Dunes Course

enniscrone anim “Some of the finest dunes to be found anywhere in the world on a links course...”

Situated beside the picturesque seaside town of Enniscrone (also spelt as Inniscrone), The Dunes Course affords panoramic views of Killala Bay, Bartra Island and sandy beaches with Nephin and the Ox Mountains forming the backdrop.

Founded in 1918, redesigned by Eddie Hackett in 1974 and by Donald Steel in 2001, this Irish championship course is one of Ireland's finest authentic golf links.

A not to be missed golfing experience.

Carne Golf Links - Belmullet, Co. Mayo

“From first tee to eighteenth green, it is all that one could ever yearn for.” — James w. Finnegan, Emerald Fairways and Foam Flecked Seas

Carne Golf Links in North Mayo on the West Coast of Ireland lies in magnificent unspoiled sand dunes overlooking Blacksod Bay and the wild Atlantic Ocean ncarneear the town of Belmullet.

The course sits on a tip of land at the edge of the Atlantic. It’s the sort of place where you’ll hear the sound of mooing cows in the distance and smell the peat as you pull into the parking lot. Like other great courses in this part of the country, Carne is an unbelievably challenging and beautiful links course that, untill recently, was virtually unknown to anyone but the Irish themselves... and remains one of the great "hidden gems" of the golfing world.

An Unusual History - Built by hand

Turasoireacht Iorrais (Erris Tourism) is a community owned and controlled company which was set up in 1984 to develop and promote the tourism industry in the region of North Mayo, Ireland. As part of this development the Company undertook the construction of Carne Golf Links on part of 260 acres of commonage which it purchased in 1985.

The comapny engaged Eddie Hackett a well known Irish golf links designer to lay out the 18 holes and Carne Golf Links was the last links course to be designed by him — considered by many to be both his greatest challenge and his greatest accomplishment.

Hackett was so taken by the natural beauty of this land that he announced: “It took nature thousands of years to create this land, we must not let the bulldozer destroy it.” Consequently, the course was built by 27 local farmers, for the most part with hand spades and rakes. They started in 1987 and finished in 1993. The clubhouse was completed in 1995.

Carne Golf Links has gone on to become one of the premium links golf courses in Ireland. It has recently been voted 7th in the top 100 golf courses in the UK & Ireland.

Lahinch Golf Club — The Old Course — Lahinch, Co. Clare

The St Andrews of Ireland

LahinchA Scottish regiment, stationed in Limerick City was out scouting one day and came upon the glorious site where the Old Course now stands. With some local residents, they established the Lahinch Golf Club on Good Friday in 1893. That same year Old Tom Morris laid out the course and charged the astronomical sum of one £ sterling plus traveling expenses.

Today, with its connection to Old Tom and the central place it plays in the physical and spiritual life of the town, Lahinch Golf Club aptly promotes itself as “The St. Andrews of Ireland.” There is no university in Lahinch, says the literature, but the town is “steeped in golf,” its inhabitants as knowledgeable about the ancient game as anywhere in the world. And they are eager to share their love of it with visitors.

Redesigned by Alister Mackenzie in 1927, Lahinch is a visual stunner to rival the British Isle's most spectacular and storied golf courses. There isn't a mundane shot on the entire golf course, and your jaw will often drop at the views. Undulating fairways, heavily guarded greens and blind shots are among Lahinch's challenges. The Old Course at Lahinch has always been one of the most beloved courses in the world, and is without doubt one of Ireland's finest.
