The Society is named in honor of Shivas Irons, a mystical and talented golf teacher from Michael Murphy's Golf in the Kingdom. In the single day he spends with Murphy on a Scottish golf course, Shivas instructs him in the spiritual aspects of golf. The game of golf is used to teach Michael life lessons.
