Literature of the Game

The Literature of Golf

The Shivas Irons Society was, in large measure, inspired by one of the great works of modern sport literature, Michael Murphy's classic masterpiece, Golf in the Kingdom. But just as the Society has forged its own identity with its contributions to the game of golf, we also wish to use our online presence to offer a diversity of perspectives that can deepen our audience's experience of the great game of golf.

Since our founding twenty yeaars ago, an important element of the Society’s mission has always been to help enrich the culture of golf, and we believe that providing the golfing community with in-depth explorations of the game, its culture and its contributions to personal development is right in line with that mission. Mainstream print and electronic media do a comprehensive job of covering the professional tours, equipment, instruction and travel. But golf has a long and very rich tradition of inspiring excellent writing (and beautiful images) that are often overlooked by today’s mass media. We want to honor that tradition and help keep it current by providing a forum for today’s writers and artists.

It is our immediate goal to gather in this section of our website a collection of literary offerings, both new and historic, in the form of commentary, poetry, criticism, short fiction, dialogues, personal interviews and the like, that will  provide these perspectives that we speak of.

Letter from Lake Orion
Wednesday, July 25, 2012

We were delighted to receive the following letter from long-time Shivas Irons Society member Tom Phillips... Tom, who qualified for and played in, this year’s United States Senior Open Championship  is obviously a golfer of significant talent... we think that this letter qualifies him also as someone with significant wisdom and insight into the camaraderie and spirit of golf that we here at the Shivas Irons Society so much admire...

Enjoy and feel free to share your comments.
