He's Back!...Third time's a charm for Tiger.  Thanks to soft greens and Sean O'Hair's over-par performance at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, Tiger wins in his 3rd start after his eight month layoff for his 8th comeback victory in 78 PGA tour wins.  Let's see how Phil responds in Houston next week and how the battle for #1 plays out.  Get ready for Augusta.  There's a number of potential threads in this story line.  I don't know that we need to confirm Tiger's ability or determination in his comeback or his overall greatness.  At the moment, I'm more intriqued by the tension between the Woods and Mickelson camps.  I thought this was supposed to be a gentleman's game.  What do you think?

I watched the back nine on the big screen in the bar at Tilden Park golf course. I was alone at the beginning, but people gradually drifted in to join me, most of them golfers who had finished their rounds on that perfect Spring day.

As Tiger and O'Hair battled to the finish, we chatted amiably about what we were watching. Everyone expected Tiger to win, everyone expected him to make the crucial putts that he made, yet we were all transfixed. And when he fell back into a tie after bogeying the 17th from a horrendous lie in the bunker, a little doubt crept in, because once Tiger takes the lead on the back nine, he almost never gives it back (Exception: I was there when he gave it back to DiMarco at Augusta after making that unforgettable chip-in on #16, but of course he sank the relatively long putt in the playoff to win). Then when he similarly sank the relatively long putt on 18 to win yesterday, I said "Haven't we seen this movie before?"

We enjoyed it nonetheless. His ecstatic outburst, jumping into caddy Steve's arms, showed me that even he might have had some doubts he could come back that quickly from his long layoff and knee surgery.

Talented O'Hair needs a lesson from Tim Clark on how not to lose confidence playing against Tiger.

Thanks Jay
I don't believe that Tiger's ecstasy upon winning was based on even the slightest doubt in his own mind. I've come to trust that fact that HE has the utmost belief in himself, even against seemingly insurmountable odds. At the end of the first two rounds I figured he was done. At the beginning of the final round, I was beyond having just a little doubt, I thought, "No Way." I do admire his determination and it's a good lesson for me. I'm liking his momentum going into Augusta. I'm wondering what you think of the Tiger - Phil relationship. Did Arnie and Jack ever have as much personal tension?

For me the Tiger - Phil relationship has been minimal - they have seldom been in the final group together. But it may develop now that Phil is within striking distance of displacing Tiger as numero uno.

I have never seen the fire in Phil's demeanor that we always see in Tiger's.

As for Arnie and Jack, I only started following professional golf in 1987, when I saw Larry Mize sink that incredible chip to steal the Masters from Greg Norman. So I've only seen the Arnie - Jack competition in occasional old reruns on the Golf Channel. (Actually it should be the Arnie - Jack - Gary competition.)

Early in Tiger's career his main rival was Ernie Els. Remember how they played to a draw in the President's Cup in the darkness in South Africa?

Which reminds me: Isn't SIS going to have a presence at this year's President's Cup match at Harding Park?
