It has been 8 years since a car crash most certainly altered me. Happily, I only lost my left elbow and not my life. The hand strenghth is diminished leaving my grip relatively weak. But knowing that I escaped with my life softened the loss of playing golf: until yesterday.
On Sunday, June 6, my husband, son and I went to our first pro event; the Memorial held at Muirfield and it all came back to me. The players were terrific, the fans were alert and respectful, and the course was, well, Muirfield. I couldn't get enough of any of it.
Golf groupies behave for the most part in a very civilized way. Twenty five years ago we split football season tickets with another couple. The best seats we could afford put us up in the top tier, altitude wise. By the 3rd quarter I would have had beer and soda spilled on me as the crowd around us grew increasingly drunk and belligerant. Golf fans drink beer but they whisper so as not to distract the pros. What a concept!!
I was gald to be back among them and have decided to take some adaptive lessons that might be able get me playing regularly, again. I'm sure I'll be able to find one who is of the SI school. I understand that my progress will be markded not in yardage but rather in the growth I notice in my personal confidence. I look forward to trying out new ways to do things that were considered impossible.
Professional golfers do impossible things every day on the course. I watched the best during the 4th round and I'm ready to try a little impossible.
Stay tuned for word of what's happening to me. I'm happy to be back.
