Rubenstein: Using golf in a time of need

“Ye can do it with a stick if ye concentrate.” — Shivas Irons

On December 30th SIS president Steve Cohen joined a group of about ninety golf aficionados, including a number of other SIS members, who turned out to celebrate the spirit and joy of golf in a manner that Shivas would undoubtably approve.

The occasion was the annual two-club tourney at Quail Lodge founded several years ago by SIS Charter Member Frank Pokigo and now co-organized by Frank and Scottish expatriate Colin Campbell.

Among the participants was award winning golf writer Lorne Rubenstein… Lorne is a fan of Golf in the Kingdom and long time supporter of the Shivas Irons Society and we are delighted to share his reflections on this event and his appreciation for "its emphasis on a collective achievement: individuals joining to help somebody in need."

AS  we stood on the 18th tee at Alistair Mackenzie's masterpiece, Pasatiempo, a simple appearing 143-yard par 3 lay ahead of what had, by then, become a duel in the late afternoon setting sun. Cohen, our Shivas, as if oblivious to the fact that all he needed for a soul scorching 59 that would engrave him in the annals of Shivas lore for all time, calmly pulled a 7-iron and let sail...

Am I a Golfer?

Jo queries whether she is a golfer and details playing at Pasatiempo in 2007.

I have worked in the SIS office for almost three years now and have never felt the urge to pick up one of the many golf clubs lying around to swing it at imaginary balls.  I do not know any golfer who would be able to walk by without at least fondling a club head. I have come to believe this is the way to test for a “true golfer”.
