I played 22 holes today and made 5 Birdies! It was a short course; I could have made more birdies if I made more putts. Have you heard that before?

Golf is my passion. My dad starting me playing golf when I was 3 years old. Ever since I can remember I have wanted to be a tour player. I have been a student of the game my whole life. On July 2, 2009, I was in a horrific car accident where a piece of my car ripped through my left arm at the elbow. Doctors were able to save my arm and reattach it with 3 titanium plates and 17 screws. I don’t really remember the accident but I do know that when I awoke in the hospital my first question was could I could still play golf. They told me I would never play again.... They were wrong — Golf has helped me recover my life... and thanks to the support from my family, friends, Prilosec and the folks at The Shivas Irons Society I will soon be in Las Cruces, New Mexico, competing in the One-Armed Golf Association Championship. This journal is intended as a record of my adventure.

It’s spring, which means it’s time to dust off the clubs and practice. Most people, when they work on their games, get sucked into what I call the “black hole” of practice. The black hole arises when you continuously hit 7-irons to the same target over and over, “working” on something. It feels good, but from an improvement and performance standpoint the brain is not learning nearly as much as it could.  Avoiding the black hole means structuring your practice a little differently, challenging the brain to make deeper and faster connections, thus improving faster and performing better.

Beware the Quicksands of Perfection

Although the 150th anniversary of the Open was celebrated this year on the venerable Old Course at St Andrews, it was Prestwick Golf Club,  located 120 miles to the west where the Open Championship was first held in 1860 (and for the first twelve Championships until 1872).  Prestwick eventually hosted 24 Opens with the last one taking place in 1925.

In the following article, first published on our website in 1997, SIS Historian Peter Shaerf  tells the interesting story of the last round of that 1925 Championship... and the effect that the constraints of space and the logistics of crowd control had on eliminating Prestwick from the Open rota, as well as the devastating consequences for runner-up Macdonald Smith —  a golfer upon whom Peter has dubbed the title of the “Greatest Player Never to Win a Major.”
