Bandon Dunes.....

Dear Fellow Shivas Friends ~

We are going to Bandon for our first pilgrimage ~ next week.  It is a trip with myself, my husband and my Dad.   We will be playing all three course!  I would love to hear advice, experiences and inspiration for playing these amazing courses.

Cheers,

Kirsten

Re: Bandon Dunes.....

Kirsten - I've been 3x, have truly seen every kind of weather except snow. Have played 36 in weather so bad, if I was sitting in my car I wouldn't get out until it let up. And I have played in early November on 75 degree days with no wind too. So a VERY GOOD Rainsuit is a must. Having one may just keep the weather away. But surely not having one will bring the heavy stuff in. But that's all part of it. On 14 at Pacific, short par 3, I have hit a murdered 6 iron, and a downwind 56* wedge on same trip, but different day.

Take a caddie. They can tell you where to hit, where not to and most of them read greens very well. But for a first timer there are some tricky transitions to the next tee box that with their direction, can save a bit of time. And while not racetrack pace there (I have seen it go from 3:50 to sadly, 5 hour rounds), you will be more relaxed and enjoy the pace with a caddie's help. Work on your bump and run, the lies are very tight and chipping with an 8 iron, or even a 5 iron happens more often than trying the shot with a 60* wedge. As my caddie said to a buddy of mine who kept trying to force the lob wedge, "Would you play links. Please!!!"

Eat every meal (and MAKE RESERVATIONS NOW!) at McKee's Pub. They fill up most every night, the food is great, and no need to pay more for the dining room for pretty much the same menu. My opinion.

Ship your clubs via UPS in plenty of time before your arrival direct to the resort. The small commuter planes from Portland fill up quick and the golf bags are first things to get left behind. Trip of a Lifetime loses some of it's luster when you're playing with a rental set. And on the same note, make sure your carry on has your golf shoes and at least the first day's golf outfit.

Don't rent a car, use Connoisseur Golf Transporation to and from Bandon airport. They have it dialed in. They know when to meet you and when to pick you up. 877-347-6466.

And if you are going to try and get a replay, let the reservation people know so you can lock it down. this time of year i think they only let replays off Bandon Dunes (since on the other courses you would be finishing in the dark in the middle of nowwhere).

Have a great time. Hope this helps.

Kirsten

How about a report on your experience at Bandon Dunes?

Thanks,    David
