“Playing the Game with all Your Heart”

Erin Hills Golf Club, Erin, Wisconsin
July 19, 2008

Play for the Claret Jug!

Join us as we continue this long-standing Shivas Irons Society Midwest tradition.

Erin Hills Golf Club is the venue fot this year's USGA Women's Amateur Public Links Championship and has been just selected by the USGA to host the 2011 US Amateur Championship... and is being seriously considered for a future US Open Championship.

The Event: Claret Jug

For four years, from 2001-2004, “Playing the Game with all Your Heart” was presented by Midwest members at the Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame. Each year the “Claret Jug” was engraved with the name of the winning member* and kept on display at the Warren. After a one-year hiatus in in 2005 we renewed the tradition at the then brand new Erin Hills Golf Club—where we had the privilege of hosting the first tournament ever played at this marvelous venue. We are delighted and proud to know that Erin Hills will support our tradition and keep the Claret Jug on permanent display.

This will be a Pro-Am tournament.  Each attendee will be paired (via a blind draw) with a competitor in Saturday's round at Royal Birkdale in England. Always interesting and great fun!

$279 fee includes practice balls; Box lunch; eighteen holes of golf (carts and caddies not included), BBQ dinner—Western Style Pig Roast with Chicken and all the trimmings.

*Guests are welcome to play but the Claret Jug competition is for SIS members only. Non-members will receive an e-mail invitation to join at a special introductory rate.

Tentative Schedule:

  • 11:00 AM - Registration. Coffee included, practice area open
  • 11:00 AM - Conversation on the history of Erin Hills with founder Bob Lang.
  • 12:00 Noon - Box lunch, group welcome.
  • 1:30 PM - Shotgun start.
  • After Golf - BBQ Dinner and Awards

This is a very special opportunity for members and potential members of the Shivas Irons Society to have a memorable outing at one of the great new golfing venues in the world.

About the Course:

Golf is a Journey...

Erin Hills Golf Course rests on a 652-acre site in the small town of Erin, thirty-five miles northwest of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Regarded by enthusiasts as one of the best natural sites for a golf course in the United States, Erin Hills received the unprecedented honor of being awarded a future USGA sanctioned event - the 2008 Women’s Amateur Public Links - before the course had even been seeded.

Since its opening last summer Erin Hills has received rave reviews throughout the world of golf. In January, 2007 it was named by Golf Magazine as 2006's “Best New Golf Course of the Year.”

BULLETIN: February 8, 2008, USGA names Erin Hills as the site for the 2011 U.S. Amateur — the course is being seriously considered as a possible U.S. Open for 2017.

Inspired by the classic Scottish and Irish courses that were once built by horse-drawn plows, Erin Hills is environmentally friendly, with very minimal land development aside from the course itself. The strikingly different holes are also highlighted by the majestic contours of the land that was naturally shaped by the glaciers thousands of years before. Little dirt was moved. The fairways and green sites remain virtually untouched, and dirt only needing to be moved on four of the course’s nineteen holes.
