Bhutan Youth Golf Association
The Bhutan Youth Golf Association (BYGA) is a non-profit foundation dedicated to sharing golf with the youth of Bhutan, and through the game to teach Bhutan's children to express friendship, honesty, integrity, morality and self-motivation.
The Shivas Irons Society is delighted to sponsor and support their efforts with a $5000 contribution and a major effort among our members to collect and ship donated golf equipment, clothing and other supplies for use by the youth of this beautiful country in the Himalayas. In return, Shivas members will receive both good karma and a healthy helping of the Bhutanese national policy of "Gross National Happiness."

Does your "golf corner" look anything like this?
Probably not as extreme, but many of us who have been at this game for awhile have accumulated quite a collection of perfectly functional golf paraphernalia (clubs, lightweight bags, gloves, balls, tees, small size shoes, shirts, etc.) just sitting around in a closet, garage or basement waiting to be put to good use again. Well, the opportunity has arrived. We are asking you to join with many other benevolent Shivas Iron Society members in donating useable equipment and supplies to the BYGA for use in their programs. In addition to golf equipment there is a need for serviceable clothing in children's or small adult sizes for both golf and everyday use.
Rick Lipsey, staff writer for Sports Illustrated Magazine and author of Golfing on the Roof of the World, has helped support the gofing effort for the youth of Bhutan and founded the BYGA as a 501(3)(c) Charitable Foundation. This has truly been a labor of love. Several PGA professionals have, at various times, spent months in Bhutan working with youngsters, instilling in them, the love and the spirit of the game.
Please help propogate this spirit and love by gathering and packing what you wish to donate and shipping it to Rick (see address below), whose home in New York City is serving as the U.S. staging location for the BYGA. From there, thanks to the largesse of one of our members, donated materials will be containerized and forwarding by ship and overland to Bhutan for distribution to the youngsters. All donations are 100% tax deductible.
The ultimate cost of international container shipping is based on the volume of the container so efficient packing is essential. The idea is for the BYGA to be able to pack your donation in the shipping container without having to do any further repacking. Also, for preparation of export paperwork and proper tax accreditation for donors, it is necessary that contents of packages be properly identified and notated. It is perfectly all right for you to get together with a group of your golfing buddies and pool your donated equipment for packing and shipping. All packages should have an envelope attached on the outside with a list of the contents and the name(s) and address(es) of the donor(s). Please mention that you are a member of the Shivas Irons Society.
