March Madness

When Luke Brosterhous’ new column (see below) arrived earlier this week I first thought that the timing just didn’t seem right. Mid-winter daydream? Surely this was a column he wrote a month or two ago. After all it’s now St. Patrick’s Day... the rush to the NCAA Championship and the “Final Four” has begun... baseball’s spring training is in full swing... the NHL regular season is approaching its conclusion... and most noticeably, CBS, ESPN and the Golf Channel are all starting to tout their upcoming coverage of the 2008 Masters with increasing frequency.

I suddenly realized that living in the mild climate of the Central California coast has put me out of touch with the ebb and flow of the seasons that many of my golfing brothers and sisters regularly experience. Of course it was The Masters that was the real clue. In my blissful enjoyment of "year round" golf I had forgotten that, for many, the only true harbinger of spring is the arrival of this first major golf event of the year. So, to those of you in the “blue states” (weather map not political map) who have recently suffered the late throes of an unusually harsh winter, (and to our cold-weather friends anywhere else in the world) whose clubs have been in storage or sitting in the corner of your garage, I send you a greeting and a renewed sense of empathy... I am with you in spirit as you wait for the remnant snow to melt, the emergence of greenery and bright color and the return of dry fairways and firm greens. I hope that, as the year progresses, I will meet many of you at one of our growing list of regional and local gatherings. Happy St. Patricks Day!

Florida Chapter Event Postponed

The Charter event of the Florida Chapter which was scheduled for March 21-22 at the PGA Village in Port St. Lucie has been postponed. In Remembrance

Howard McKee of Chicago, Illinois and Cascade Head, Oregon had passed away in December after a long battle with colon cancer.

Howard was an accomplished architect and urban planner with an international reputation as someone whose professional work challenged conventional thinking by focusing not only on the design of a project, but also how it would serve the community and fit into the surrounding environment.

Howard McKee did not play golf himself, so it may seem ironic that his greatest legacy is likely to be his contribution to the landscape of American golf.

In 1988, McKee had joined with his good friend Michael Keiser to create the great American links golf course, Bandon Dunes in Bandon, Oregon. For the last 20 years, he had dedicated his talents to creating a resort that makes a golfer walk away awed not only by the challenge of the course, but for the beauty of nature uncluttered with manmade amenities. McKee explained that “The vision was malleable, but the principles don’t change. It’s honoring the land. It’s building on the natural environment here that gets discovered if you spend time with it. The key is not to violate it.”

McKee, a non-golfer, joined the Society in 2004 and became a key supporter of the Journal of the Shivas Irons Society.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, Dr. Kennon Pate McKee, his children, grandchildren and extended family and his countless friends.

Winds of March, we welcome you,
There is work for you to do.
Work and play and blow all day,
Blow the Winter wind away.

CONNECTIONS is intended to promote the exchange of information between members in all geographic areas and in transcendent and synchronistic ways. It is a forum for reporting on past events, announcing upcoming ones, seeking assistance, and connecting with others.

We wish to generate discussion on local, regional, national, international and inter-dimensional levels. Our inspiration comes from a poster labeled “Dangerous Connections” that Shivas Irons revealed to Michael Murphy in Golf in the Kingdom. Like the philosophers and their inventions on that poster, we are all connected in a deep, mysterious, and intriguing way.

Along with our website and The Journal of the Shivas Irons Society we shall continue to bring you feature articles, in-depth reflections and stories from members and other writers, past and present.

Please make the “Connection” and let us know what is going on with YOU and the group in your area, however large or small. Submit pictures, experiences, comments or questions to CONNECTIONS@shivas.org
