ABOUT THE COVER
The cover art on this issue of the Journal is taken from one of the British railway posters that are featured in the article on that subject (beginning on page 34). It depicts an attitude toward golf that is rather refreshing in this day and age when most golfers, at least the American version, take the game so seriously. One can’t imagine the fellow with the bag of clubs worrying much about the plane of his backswing, standing on a range beating out hundreds of practice shots to perfect a five-foot draw, consulting a physical therapist or sports psychologist about adding distance to his drives or containing his emotions over a three-foot putt for the match. He has just finished playing, or is off to the links for a few holes, and either way is more interested in having a chat with a lady friend (not his wife, it would appear) with in mind a bit of dinner and dancing that evening should she be interested.
In today’s electronic, nano-second world the air of nonchalance that this picture suggests is enviable.
